Baitul Maal New Zealand has welcomed one of the most special months of the Islamic calendar with a campaign called “Ramadan: The Month of Giving”.
“We wish everyone a blessed month. Muslims are reminded to be generous and increase their charitable activities in addition to fasting and additional worship.”
The campaign consists of two components: a fundraising target of $100,000 to grow New Zealand’s first waqf fund and encouraging Muslims to give Islamic charity.
“Many verses of the Quran and many sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasise the importance of charity. The rewards are multiplied during Ramadan,” said Mohammed Afiz.
Baitul Maal New Zealand manages New Zealand’s first waqf fund. All waqf funds raised will be invested in a Shari’ah compliant way to grow this further. The returns will be used to provide a variety of social and welfare-based services to both Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
“In addition to donating through our website, we have established a Givealittle campaign. Please help us make this viral,” said Mohammed Afiz.
Islamic charity being collected and distributed by Baitul Maal New Zealand is both related to Ramadan, such as Fidyah for missing fasts and Sadaqat ul-fitr, to enable those less fortunate to enjoy the ‘Eid celebration. It is also Zakat ul-mal (payable on wealth) and sadaqah (voluntary charity), which could be paid throughout the year but is more rewarded in Ramadan.
“We aim to build on the record-breaking collection in last year’s Ramadan and help even more people this year,” said Mohammed Afiz.
Baitul Maal New Zealand is a registered charitable trust and is registered as a charity on the Charities Register. It is a member of the World Zakat and Waqf Forum, the global platform advocating the awareness of zakat. Baitul Maal New Zealand was established by the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) in 2011 to resurrect the Islamic Baitul Maal (“House of wealth”) system for the collection and distribution of Islamic charity and to introduce to New Zealand the concept of Waqf (perpetual trust for charitable purposes).
